The Makapu'u event kicked off in great fashion with 2 to 3 ft groomed surf. The event started with the 13 to 18 old division and great performances. Shawbaz Soaia from the Big Island stepped his game up this event with big backflips and a polished routine that got him to the finals. Also, Shayden Wolf (Oahu), Kawika Rorh (Oahu), and a slue of Makapu'u locals showed skills beyond their age.
Joining Shawbaz in the finals was Sandy Beach local Keanu Casemeiro (Oahu), Matt Holzmann (Kauai), and Kawika Roth, all surfing extremely well. However, it was Matt Holzmann that stood out from the rest with an amazing air roll spin (ARS) to roll in the semis and a big backflip in the final for the two highest scores of the event.
Heading into the Open division there was a lot of action from the top seeds: JB Hillen, Trevor Kam, Matt Holzmann, Ryan Celle, Kahekile Labatte (Maui), Rylelle Colle and Jesse Walsh (Maui). The final consisted of Kahekili Labatte, Trevor Kam, Matt Holzman, and Shawbaz Soaia. All the riders surfed extremely well but it was Oahu's own Trevor Kam who won the event taking his first ever win at Makapu'u.
The Womens division saw bodyboard star JB Hillen's sister summer take out her division in the Open Womens as well defeat some of her brother's rivals Open Mens division, making it all the way to the quarters.
The ever-competitive Drop Knee division had Kawika Rohr showing his youthful skill against vets like Kapena Kaouiki who won the event.
Finishing the day was the Stand up division where professional surfer Kekoa Casemerio jumped on a bodyboard and battled for the win over the young Kawika Rohr who was on fire. Kawika Rohr had an amazing barrel to snap, but it was Kekoa who had the most power in his maneuvers from years of practice. During the awards ceremony, Kekoa gave his prize of an Aqua hotel room stay and gear from Science to Kawika to show his stoke for how well the young Kawika Rohr had surfed.
