USBA SCIENCE HAWAII REGIONAL TOUR
EVENT #2 BANYANS
SPONSORS: SCIENCE BODYBOARDS, GYROLL, MS VIPER, MILLERS SURF, GO/MOKULELE, CHRISTIAN SURFERS HONOLULU,BIO-ASTIN, & VITAMIN WATER
This weekend’s event at Banyan’s (Kailua, Kona) was so much fun we forgot there was a contest going on. The Banyan’s locals opened up their doors and arms to welcome the USBA once again and the Aloha was more than shared. Uncles and Anties came out to support the kids from all over Hawaii. One family was so nice they brought cookies for the Judges and earrings for the tabulator girl at the event and they did not even have a youth in the event. But that is just Big Island for you, true Aloha and true Hawaii from Makua to Makai the kokua was on par with none. But at the same time the action was on par with none as well.
The day started off with clean 2-3 ft, but with long period and long waits for waves. However Swabaz Soaia made due with a combination for the first 9 of the event, with a air roll spin to spin to roll which appeased the crowd. The other main players in the 13-18 division were Tanner McDaniel with highflying action, Matt Holzman with wave knowledge mature to the rest of the field and Kua Salinas local boy with the fastest and smoothest contest style the USBA have seen in years.
Moving on to the highly competitive Drop Knee Division it was Sammy “ the Mercat” Morrentino who really stole the show, he would combo waves with flow from one snap/turn to a floater of the inside rocks with ease, even taking out riders his senior such as runner up and local Colby Alcos and Willy Petrovick who were also surfing very well.
The open division had many surprises as Calvin Cerrone the first 12 and under rider we have had made an Open Amateur final in history. However it was the older competitors who really showed their skills in the final. Swabaz Soaia was in form all day and Sammy Morretino was poised to win the event with two near make roll to backflip attempts. However Kua Salinas utilized his first wave to the fullest with the highest one wave score of the contest a 9.5 for a double spin to backflip which actually won him the event. Kua left himself open with no back up score for his top two but the waves were on his side with the buzzer going off prior to Sammy getting another back up score.
The girls of the day put on an amazing show with a new first time competitor taking home first place, Stephanie Frank with clean rolls took out last years winner Liana Carson for her first win.
The converted Stand up bodyboard division was a true example of all around talent Hawaii riders have, with local boy Chevise Conte taking out a talent field with amazing snaps and floaters. Chevise was not sure if he was going to enter in the morning but walked home the champion with a load of prizes from SCIENCE, GYROLL and GO/MOKULELE.
The USBA SCIENCE HI REGIONAL TOUR is all about the groms and their talent and they did not disappoint with tons of talent and stoke to carry the whole event. There was great surfing by all the riders but it was Waimanalo’s (Oahu) own Shaydon Wolfe taking out the division as a preamble to his venture to the Mainland for the US Open of bodyboarding in Huntington Beach in June. Shaydon had family on the Big Island taking care of him and rooting him to the win at the biggest turnout of the tour for the 12 and under division.
Mahalo to all supporters and athletes
